Biography
Classically trained actor Jon Bernthal consistently captivates audiences with various roles across a multitude of genres.
Bernthal can recently be seen in the HBO Series We Own This City as ‘Sgt. Wayne Jenkins’ for which he received rave reviews including Vulture stating “Bernthal infuses Jenkins with distinctly Baltimorean swagger. Speaking with boastful, rounded o’s and walking with a sway that suggests he’s ready to spring into attack mode at any time, you can’t take your eyes off the guy even when his behavior is so abhorrent you want to… It’s a high-voltage, Emmy-worthy performance.”
Prior, he was seen in Lena Dunham’s feature film Sharp Stick, alongside Kristine Froseth, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Taylour Paige. He also starred in King Richard from director Reinaldo Marcus Green, alongside Will Smith and Aunjanue Ellis. Bernthal played Serena and Venus Williams’ famed tennis coach Rick Macci. The film was nominated for a SAG Award for Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture and also received a Critics Choice nomination for Best Picture. Bernthal appeared in Netflix’s original feature The Unforgivable, opposite Sandra Bullock, which broke into the all-time Top 10 movies watched on Netflix.
In addition to his on-screen projects, Bernthal recently started a weekly podcast called “Real Ones” in which he gives the microphone to some of the most interesting, authentic people living on the front lines of the big issues of our time including soldiers, doctors, police officers, activists, and first responders. The product is an honest, open dialogue that is informative, funny, and at times heartbreaking. The most recent episode received almost 5 million views.
Last fall, Bernthal played Tony Soprano’s father, ‘Johnny Boy Soprano’ in the Sopranos movie prequel, The Many Saints of Newark, opposite an all-star cast. Additionally, Bernthal recently starred in the feature film adaptation of Small Engine Repair, which he also co-produced based on the award-winning stage production which he also produced and starred in.
On the television side, he starred in the BJ Novak anthology series, The Premise, for a compelling episode titled ‘Moment of Silence’ which has garnered critical acclaim for its thought-provoking subject matter and for his standout performance. He also appeared in an episode of Hulu’s The Bear and can be seen in Showtime’s adaptation of American Gigolo.
Bernthal starred in James Mangold’s Ford V. Ferrari as Lee Iacocca, alongside Christian Bale and Matt Damon. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2019 to critical acclaim and received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. In 2019, he also appeared in The Peanut Butter Falcon alongside Shia LaBeouf and Dakota Johnson. The film received the Narrative Spotlight Award at SXSW Festival in March 2019 and was nominated by the DGA for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Feature Film. Bernthal opened multiple films in 2017, including Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver for Sony Pictures, in which he starred alongside Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Jon Hamm, and Jamie Foxx.
In 2013, he starred in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, and Margot Robbie. Terence Winter wrote the script about the rise and fall of Wall Streeter Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio). The film was released by Paramount Pictures on Christmas day and was nominated for five Academy Awards – including Best Picture.

Alongside his father, Bernthal launched a production company called Story Factory with several film and television projects in development.
Bernthal played the role of "Frank Castle/The Punisher" in the Netflix spin-off series The Punisher based on the Marvel comic. He received rave reviews for his performance in the series, which premiered in November 2017. The show’s second season debuted in January 2019. His performance originated in the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil series, which debuted in 2015. Additionally, Bernthal starred in HBO’s mini-series Show Me A Hero alongside Oscar Isaac, Jim Belushi, and Winona Ryde, which also premiered in 2015.
Bernthal starred as “Shane Walsh” in AMC's breakout hit television series, The Walking Dead, based on Robert Kirkman's comic book of the same name. Bernthal's extraordinary portrayal as a survivor of the zombie apocalypse marks another remarkable turn in a career defined by acclaimed and varied performances both on stage and on screen. The Walking Dead earned recognition as one of AFI's Ten Best Television Programs of the Year. The series also set new records as the most-watched drama series in basic cable history and has aired internationally in over 120 countries and 33 languages.
Bernthal also starred as the lead in Frank Darabont's Mob City for TNT which premiered on December 4th, 2013. The show was set in Los Angeles during the 1940s and '50s. It's a world of glamorous movie stars, powerful studio heads, returning war heroes, a powerful and corrupt police force and an even more dangerous criminal network determined to make L.A. its West Coast base.
His other television work includes the Steven Spielberg HBO miniseries, The Pacific, as well as on: Boston Legal, CSI: Miami, Law & Order Special Victims Unit, How I Met Your Mother, and Without A Trace. His first series in a starring role was The Class, created by David Crane and directed by James Burrows.
A veteran of more than 30 productions, Bernthal most recently returned to his roots in the Rogue Machine Theatre's production of Small Engine Repair, where he starred as “Terrance Swaino.” Bernthal also produced the play, a dark comedy-drama that charts three working-class friends in Manchester, New Hampshire as they reunite for an evening of drinking, fighting, and reminiscing. Bernthal earned a 2011 Ovation Award nomination for his performance, which had its New York premiere for MCC in the Fall of 2013. Bernthal had previously starred in Neil LaBute's Fat Pig at the Geffen Playhouse. His other theatre credits include Langford Wilson's Fifth of July at New York's Signature Theatre, the off-Broadway production of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, where Bernthal played “Ui,” at the Portland Stage Company; and This is Our Youth, at the Studio Theatre in Washington, D.C. His love of theatre led him to open his own non-profit theatre company Fovea Floods, in upstate New York.
During his college years, Bernthal was given the remarkable opportunity to study at the prestigious Moscow Arts Theatre in Russia, renowned for its regimented program and disciplined training. Educated in acting, acrobatics, ballet, and rhythm, the intense training provided Bernthal with a solid foundation in his craft. While studying at MAT, Bernthal was discovered by the director of Harvard University's Institute for Advanced Theatre Training, at the American Repertory Theatre in Moscow. He was invited to study there and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts.
Bernthal was a professional baseball player both in the U.S. minor leagues and European Professional Baseball Federation. These days, Bernthal prefers boxing, for which he trains six days a week. He teaches boxing to at-risk children, drawing out their discipline and work ethic, and helping them to channel their issues into a sport that teaches them confidence and control. Bernthal also works to retrain pit bulls that have been abused, subsequently placing them in new, loving homes. Bernthal resides in Ojai, California.

The water hit the dog first.
A full plastic bottle, squeezed hard enough to send a clear arc across the red vinyl booth.
It struck the Belgian Malinois over the head, ran down his muzzle, soaked the fur beneath his ears, and darkened the green tactical harness strapped around his chest.
The dog flinched.
Only once.
Then he went perfectly still.
A few drops slid from his whiskers onto the black-and-white tile floor.
Across the aisle, six bikers erupted into laughter.
Their leader was the loudest.
A huge man with a black bandana tied over his head, a thick beard reaching almost to his chest, and arms so large that the leather vest over his black shirt looked stretched across his shoulders.
The patch on his back showed a snarling skull beneath the words:
IRON REAPERS.
He crushed the empty bottle in one hand.
— What’s wrong, soldier?
His grin widened.
— Dog not so tough when he’s wet?
The diner fell quiet.
Not gradually.
Instantly.
Forks stopped halfway to mouths.
A spoon tapped against a coffee cup and seemed unnaturally loud.
Behind the counter, the young waitress froze with a pot of coffee in her hand.
Her reddish-brown hair was tied back.
The little metal name tag pinned above her pink-and-white uniform read:
CAFE BREEN.
Her name was Rachel.
And she looked terrified.
The man sitting beside the dog did not move.
His name was Daniel Mercer.
Forty-seven years old.
Short graying military haircut.
A pale scar ran from the edge of his left cheek toward his ear.
Another disappeared beneath the collar of his Army OCP uniform.
On his chest were his name tape, rank insignia, and the quiet evidence of a life the bikers had not bothered to read.
He stared at the leader.
No anger.
No panic.
Only stillness.
That was what changed the room.
Because men who wanted to fight usually showed it.
They puffed their chests.
Clenched their fists.
Raised their voices.
Daniel did none of those things.
He picked up a napkin.
Slowly wiped the water from the dog’s face.
The Malinois watched him.
Alert.
Waiting.
— Easy, Ranger.
The dog’s ears shifted slightly.
The biker leader laughed again.
— Ranger?
He looked at his men.
— Hear that? Army boy named his little puppy Ranger.
More laughter.
One of the bikers slapped the table.
Another leaned back in his booth and shouted:
— Ask him if the dog wants a towel.
Daniel kept wiping the animal’s face.
Rachel finally moved.
She set the coffee pot down with trembling hands.
— Sir…
The biker turned.
— What?
Rachel swallowed.
— Please don’t bother the dog.
He stared at her for a second.
Then smiled.
— Sweetheart, go refill my coffee.
Rachel didn’t move.
The grin vanished.
— I said coffee.
Daniel looked at her.
Only briefly.
But she understood.

The biker turned toward him again.
— You got something to say, soldier?
Daniel folded the wet napkin.
Placed it on the table.
Then unclipped Ranger’s tactical leash.
The metallic clasp made a sharp sound in the silence.

Ranger’s eyes followed his hand.
— Stay.
The dog did not move.
Daniel stood.
He was not as large as the biker.
Not close.
But when he rose from the booth, something about him made size suddenly feel less important.
Heavy military boots touched the floor.
One step.
Then another.
Daniel stopped directly in front of the biker.
The man grinned again, but there was less confidence in it now.
— There we go.

— You done?

— With the dog.

Then he looked back at the leader.
— I did.
That answer bothered the big man more than any threat could have.
He leaned closer.
— You think that uniform makes you special?
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
— No.
— Think the dog makes you dangerous?
— No.
— Then what exactly are you trying to prove?
Daniel answered quietly.
— Nothing.
The biker smiled.
— Good.
He placed one massive hand against Daniel’s chest.
Rachel gasped.
Ranger’s body tightened.
Daniel did not look away from the biker.
— Ranger.
The dog’s ears snapped forward.
— Stay.
His voice was calm.
The leader glanced toward the Malinois.
Then chuckled.
— You gotta keep telling him that?
Daniel looked at the hand on his chest.
— No.
The biker’s grin faded.
Daniel raised his eyes.
— I’m telling myself.
No one laughed.
For the first time, genuine uncertainty appeared in the biker’s face.
Then the diner door opened.
Cold sunlight poured across the floor.
A police officer stepped inside.
Rachel almost collapsed from relief.
But Daniel didn’t.
Because the moment he saw the officer, something in his face changed.

Recognition.

— Working dog?
— Retired military working dog.
That made him pause.
Only for a fraction of a second.
Boone folded his arms.
— Guy got aggressive because I spilled some water.
Rachel stared at him.
— That’s not what happened.
Hollis turned toward her.
— Rachel.
His tone was not loud.
But it carried a warning.
Rachel stopped.
Daniel saw it.
He had seen that look before.
Not in restaurants.
In villages.
In briefing rooms.
In countries where everyone knew who was dangerous but nobody said the name first.
Hollis looked back at Daniel.
— Maybe you should finish your meal and leave.
Daniel said nothing.
Boone smiled.
— Sounds reasonable.
Then Ranger growled.

Controlled.

The officer looked toward the dog.

Hollis’s expression changed.
— Why?
Daniel looked at Ranger.
— Because my dog smells something he recognizes.
Hollis scoffed.
— He’s retired.
— So am I from most of the things I used to do.

Boone moved between them.
— Enough.
Daniel finally looked at him.
The biker’s face was different now.

But underneath it…

The entire diner seemed to stop breathing.
Hollis’s hand froze.
Boone stepped forward.
— You really don’t know when to stop.
Daniel looked at him.
— I know exactly when to stop.
He glanced toward Ranger.
— He doesn’t react to water.
He reacts to chemical traces.
The red dust on Officer Hollis’s glove came from somewhere with nitrates mixed into it.
Probably fertilizer.
Maybe blasting compound residue.
Ranger picked up the same scent behind this building.
Hollis laughed once.
Too loudly.
— That’s ridiculous.
Daniel turned to Rachel.
— Have there been deliveries here today?
She nodded slowly.
— One.
— From who?
She looked toward Boone.
That was enough.
Daniel understood.
Boone swore under his breath.
Hollis’s face hardened.
— Everybody sit down.
Nobody moved.
His voice rose.
— I said sit down!
Daniel looked at him.
— Rachel, call state police.
Her eyes widened.
Hollis snapped:
— Don’t touch that phone.
Now everyone knew.
The illusion broke in an instant.
Customers stood.
A woman grabbed her child.
Someone near the front whispered:
— Oh my God.
Hollis drew his weapon halfway.
Daniel moved.
Not toward him.
Sideways.
Putting himself between Hollis and the civilians.
— Ranger.
The Malinois stood.
— Heel.
The dog crossed the diner like a shadow and stopped beside Daniel’s left leg.
Boone’s men began spreading out.
But not toward Daniel.
Toward the exits.
Daniel noticed.
So did Rachel.
— They’re blocking the doors.
Boone looked at her.
— Shut up.
Daniel’s gaze sharpened.
— What’s in the shed?
Boone said nothing.
— Drugs?
Nothing.
— Guns?
Still nothing.
Ranger growled again.
Daniel looked at the dog.
Then toward the storage area.
— Explosives.
For the first time, Boone looked genuinely frightened.
Not because Daniel had guessed.
Because he had guessed correctly.
Hollis pulled his gun fully.
— Everyone on the ground!
Screams erupted.
Chairs overturned.
People dropped behind booths.
Rachel crouched behind the counter.
Daniel didn’t.
Hollis aimed at him.
— You too!
Daniel raised his hands slowly.
— Ranger.
The dog stayed beside him.
— Down.
Ranger lowered himself.
Daniel kept his eyes on Hollis.
— You don’t want to fire that weapon in here.
— Get down!
— If there are unstable materials in the back, you don’t know what vibration or accidental impact might do.
Hollis hesitated.
Daniel saw it.
That told him something else.
The officer did not fully understand what was stored there.
Boone did.
Boone shouted:
— Hollis, put the damn gun away.
Hollis turned.
— You said this was handled.
— It was until you came in waving your badge around!
The diner went silent again.
Boone realized what he had said.
Too late.
Daniel spoke.
— Rachel.
She peeked over the counter.
— Your cameras recording?
Boone turned toward her.
Rachel froze.
Daniel did not.
— Don’t answer.
Boone moved.
Daniel stepped into his path.
The biker stopped.
— Move.
— No.
— You’re making a big mistake.
Daniel’s face was cold.
— I’ve made bigger.
Boone swung first.
A heavy right hand.
Daniel ducked.
The fist missed his temple and smashed into a chrome divider.
Boone cursed.
Daniel did not counter with a wild punch.
He stepped inside the larger man’s reach, trapped the arm, shifted his weight, and drove Boone chest-first into the edge of the booth.
The biker roared.
Two of his men moved.
Ranger stood.
Daniel shouted:
— Stay!
The dog froze.
One biker grabbed Daniel’s shoulder.
Daniel pivoted, broke the grip, and used the man’s momentum to send him over the corner of a chair.
Another stopped.
Not because he suddenly respected Daniel.
Because Ranger was staring at him.
Absolutely still.
Teeth barely visible.
Daniel pointed at the floor.
— Sit down.
The biker looked at Boone.
Boone was struggling to stand.
Daniel repeated:
— Sit.
The biker sat.
Boone spat blood from a split lip.
— You think you won?
Daniel looked at him.
— This isn’t a fight.
Boone laughed.
— Could’ve fooled me.
— A fight is when both people are trying to win.
Daniel glanced toward the rear door.
— I’m trying to keep everyone alive.
That shut Boone up.
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Hollis looked toward the front windows.
Panic flashed across his face.
Rachel had managed to reach something beneath the counter.
A silent alarm.
Hollis turned toward her.
Daniel saw the movement.
— Don’t.
Hollis aimed.
Ranger exploded forward.
Not at the officer’s throat.
At his gun arm.
The Malinois struck with brutal precision, clamping onto the padded sleeve and driving Hollis sideways.
The weapon hit the floor.
Daniel kicked it beneath a booth.
— Out!
He shouted to the customers.
— Front door! Move!
People ran.
Boone’s men did not stop them.
Whatever loyalty they had to their leader ended when police sirens became real.
Hollis screamed and tried to hit Ranger.
— Release!

The dog released instantly.

State troopers burst through the front door seconds later.
Weapons raised.

The lead trooper stared at him.
— Who are you?
Daniel looked at Ranger.
— Someone whose dog noticed first.
The diner was evacuated.
Bomb technicians arrived.
So did federal agents after the first materials were identified.
Daniel sat on the curb outside beneath the neon sign.
Ranger beside him.
The dog was still wet.
Rachel approached carrying two towels.
— These were all I could find.
Daniel took one.
— Thanks.
She knelt and helped dry Ranger.
The Malinois looked at her.
Then licked her wrist once.
Rachel laughed through her tears.
— I guess he forgives me for freezing.
Daniel looked at her.
— You didn’t freeze.
— I did.
— You hit the alarm.
— After like five minutes.
— Courage isn’t speed.
She looked at him.
— You say things like that a lot?
— No.
— Good.
Because it sounds like something printed on a military poster.
Daniel almost smiled.
Across the parking lot, Boone sat handcuffed beside a patrol car.
Hollis was in another vehicle.
His arm had been bandaged.
The dog had not broken the bone.
He could have.
Daniel had trained Ranger not to.
A federal agent walked over.
— Sergeant Major Mercer?
Daniel looked up.
— Retired from that rank.
The agent nodded.
— Special Agent Julia Vance.
ATF.
We found commercial blasting material, detonators, stolen firearms, and cash in the shed.
Daniel’s expression did not change.
Rachel’s did.
— In our diner?
Vance looked at her.
— Apparently the back storage space was being used without the owner’s knowledge.
Boone’s group had access through one of your delivery vendors.
Rachel frowned.
— Why?
Vance glanced toward Boone.
— That’s what we’re working on.
Daniel looked at Hollis.
— He was protecting them.
— Seems that way.
She studied Daniel.
— You recognized residue on his glove?
— Ranger did.
— You guessed explosive material from that?
— Educated guess.
Vance looked at the dog.
— He’s good.
Daniel rubbed the Malinois behind one ear.
— Better than me.
Rachel asked:
— Were they going to blow something up?
Vance hesitated.
— We don’t know yet.
Boone suddenly looked toward them.
— Ask him.
Daniel turned.
Boone was smiling.
Not arrogantly this time.
Bitterly.
— Ask the hero why he’s really here.
Vance frowned.
— What does that mean?
Boone raised his voice.
— He didn’t just wander into this diner.
Did you, Mercer?
Daniel’s face changed.
Rachel looked at him.
— What’s he talking about?
Boone laughed.
— Tell them.
Daniel stared at him.
Then looked at Vance.
— I came here because of the dog.
Rachel blinked.
— Ranger?
Daniel nodded.
— This was the last place his former handler ate before he died.
