THE HONOR IN THE DUST

The heavy silence in checkout lane four was suffocating.
The cocky young man, Tyler,
lay sprawled on the cold supermarket floor,
his cheek pressed against the dirty linoleum.
He clutched his twisted arm,
his breathing ragged as he stared in absolute horror at the heavy bronze military medal resting inches from his nose.

The medal featured a deeply engraved soaring eagle gripping a double-edged sword,
stamped with a distinctive crimson star and a serial number: 001-ELITE.

The impatient cashier stood frozen behind her register,
her hand suspended over the scanning bed as if time itself had stopped.
The wealthy customers behind them in line slowly lowered their baskets,
their eyes locked onto the elderly woman’s torn grey cardigan.
She wasn't shivering anymore.
Her posture was as rigid, straight,
and imposing as an iron pillar.

“Call... call the police!”
Tyler choked out,
blood trickling from his nose onto the floor.
“This crazy old hag assaulted me!
I’m a paying customer!
She’s a dangerous vagrant!”
