Chapter 4: The Fire Finally Awakens

"Claire!"
"What do you think you're doing?"
My older brother roared, signaling security to move in.
"He's nothing but a little scammer!"
I jumped to my feet and pulled the little boy behind me.
For the first time in my life, rage burned hotter than fear.
"Take one more step..."
"...and you'll regret it."
I ripped away the heavy fabric that tangled around my expensive gown.
In that moment...
The obedient daughter my family had controlled for years disappeared forever.
"You actually believed you could bury your crimes forever?"
Every word struck the room like a blade.
"You tortured my sister."
"You abandoned my nephew to survive alone on the streets."
I pulled out my phone.

For years, I had secretly kept the direct number to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, hoping I would never need it.
Tonight, I finally pressed the call button.
"This family's fake charity empire ends tonight."
I spoke loudly enough for every journalist in the ballroom to hear as cameras flashed from every direction.
"I'm taking everything you've stolen."
"And I'm bringing my sister home."
Then I bent down and lifted the mud-covered little boy into my arms.
His dirty clothes stained my silver gown.
I didn't care.

Because the filth in that ballroom had never been the child.
It was the monsters hiding behind custom-tailored suits, priceless jewelry, and perfect smiles.
