Chapter 3: “There is one last thing,” she whispered.

I knew what was coming before she said it.
“If something happens to me… would you watch over Sophie?”
I looked through the doorway.
Sophie was asleep in a chair, still wearing the white sneakers.
The same shoes that had started all of this.
“Yes,” I said.
Without hesitation.
“Yes, I will.”
Emma closed her eyes and cried quietly.
Three days later, she passed away peacefully.
The funeral was small.
Just a few friends.
A nurse.
Myself.
And Sophie.

Afterward, I began the legal process of becoming her guardian.
It wasn’t easy.
