A Seed of Life in the Storm / Chapter 1 / 4

Part 1

“A Seed of Life in the Storm”

The storm carried a name the city would not be able to bury.

Years would pass. Streets would be repaired, windows replaced, roofs rebuilt, and still people would speak of that night in a lower voice, as if the memory itself could hear them. Ten years later, all anyone had to say was that night, and the whole city would understand.

The night the sky seemed to split open after holding its breath for too long.

The night the wind tore through the streets with the rage of something living.

The night the rain did not simply fall from the clouds.

It attacked.

Against that enormous darkness, against the screaming weather and the city swallowed by water and fear, there was one small life at the center of it all. A ten-year-old boy named Leo, barefoot and terrified, standing on the edge of a world that had just taken everything from him.

Leo would never be able to remember the fire as a clear beginning. Memory did not give him a neat first spark or a warning he could understand. It gave him heat. It gave him the sudden roar of flames. It gave him the color of the world turning orange, then black, then slipping into a place where nothing made sense anymore.

One moment, he had been at home, half-asleep on a couch too small for his growing body. The next, he was running through chaos with bare feet, coughing so hard the air felt broken inside him, screaming for the voices that should have answered.

But no answer came.

No familiar call reached back through the smoke. No hand found his in the confusion. No one he loved stepped out of the fire and into the storm.

Outside, the city was already being swallowed. Rain lashed against everything, driven by a wind that seemed determined to erase the streets. The storm spread over the world Leo had known, and by the time it fully took the city in its mouth, the boy had no family left to call.

No home waited behind him.

No safe place stood ahead of him.

No dry corner of the world still belonged to Leo.
