PART 1:

The summer evening glowed gold across the busiest shopping district in the city.

Music drifted from rooftop cafés. Laughter echoed from outdoor restaurants. Luxury storefronts sparkled beneath strings of warm lights.

Emma Blake barely noticed any of it.

She was rushing through the crowd, answering work messages while balancing a designer handbag on her shoulder.

Then suddenly—

Tiny fingers grabbed the gold chain of her purse.

Emma spun around.

“Hey! Don’t touch me!”

People nearby turned to stare.

The little boy instantly stepped back.

He looked no older than eight.

His hoodie was too large for his small frame. Dirt stained his sneakers. Dark circles rested beneath eyes that seemed far too tired for a child.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Emma tightened her grip on her bag.

Wonderful.

Another street kid looking for money.

“I don’t carry cash.”

The boy swallowed hard.

“I don’t want money.”

Something in his voice made Emma pause.

Slowly, he opened his hand.

A golden leaf-shaped pin rested in his palm.

A blue teardrop jewel sparkled in its center.

Emma’s breath stopped.

Her hand instinctively touched her coat.

The exact same pin was attached to her collar.

Her heart skipped.

That wasn't possible.

Only two identical pins had ever existed.

Their mother had commissioned them from a private jeweler before she died.

One belonged to Emma.

The other had belonged to her younger sister.

Sophia.

The sister who had vanished eleven years ago.

“Where did you get this?” Emma demanded.

The boy pointed toward her coat.

“My mom has the same one.”

The world seemed to tilt.

“What did you say?”

“My mom told me if I ever got lost, I should find the woman with the matching pin.”

Emma felt her knees weaken.

“What is your mother's name?”

The boy hesitated.

Then quietly said:

“Sophia.”

The noise of the city disappeared.

Emma stared at him.

“No.”

The boy reached into his pocket and pulled out a faded photograph.

Emma grabbed it.

Her hands trembled.

There was no mistake.

The woman in the photo was Sophia.

Older.

Thinner.

But undeniably Sophia.

Standing beside her was the same little boy.

Tears filled Emma’s eyes.

After eleven years...

Her sister was alive.

“Where is she?” Emma asked desperately.

The boy looked down.

His lips trembled.

“She told me to run.”

A cold chill raced through Emma.

“Run from who?”

Before he could answer—

SCREEEECH!

A black SUV slammed to a stop beside the sidewalk.

The boy's face drained of color.

“No...” he whispered.

The rear doors burst open.

Two large men jumped out.

“There he is!”

The boy grabbed Emma's hand.

His fingers were shaking violently.

“They found me.”

One of the men started running toward them.

Emma's heart pounded.

“Who are they?”

The boy looked up at her with tears in his eyes.

“They took my mom.”

The man was only feet away now.

And for the first time in her life—

May you like

Emma felt truly terrified.
