Part 2: The Woman in the White Dress

The private hospital was unusually quiet.
Outside, rain tapped softly against the large glass windows.
Inside Room 407, time seemed to move differently.
Slower.
Heavier.
Crueler.
Lucas Bennett sat beside his wife’s bed.
His fingers intertwined with Amelia’s.
He had barely slept in three days.
Dark circles shadowed his eyes.
His shoulders looked heavier.
As though he had been carrying the weight of the world alone.
Across the room, little Sophia slept curled up on a couch beneath a blanket.
A stuffed rabbit rested in her arms.
She didn’t understand what was happening.
Not fully.
She only knew her mother was sick.
And that everyone seemed sad.
Lucas looked at Amelia.
Machines quietly monitored every heartbeat.
Every breath.
Every fragile second she had left.
The doctors had already prepared him.
The treatments had failed.
The specialists had exhausted every option.
Now all they could offer was comfort.
And time.
A little more time.
Amelia slowly opened her eyes.
She looked tired.
Very tired.
But when she saw Lucas, she smiled.
The same smile she had given him on their first date.
The same smile that had helped him survive the worst years of his life.
“You’re still here.”
Lucas squeezed her hand.
“Always.”
A tear formed in Amelia’s eye.
“You should rest.”
“I’m not leaving.”
Her smile trembled.
“I know.”
The room fell silent.
Neither wanted to discuss what both already knew.
Neither wanted to say goodbye.
Not yet.
Not today.
Maybe not ever.
Then suddenly—
The hospital room door opened.
Without knocking.
Without permission.
Without respect.
Lucas turned.
And immediately froze.
Standing in the doorway was a woman dressed entirely in white.
A wedding gown.
Expensive.
Elegant.
Perfectly tailored.
The kind featured on magazine covers.
The kind designed for fairy tales.
Except there was nothing beautiful about this moment.
Because the woman wearing it was Vanessa Hart.
For several seconds nobody spoke.
Lucas genuinely thought he was hallucinating.
Of all places.
Of all days.
Of all moments.
Why here?
Why now?
Vanessa stepped inside.
Her heels clicking softly against the polished floor.
She looked exactly as she had always wanted to look.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
Victorious.
Yet somehow, seeing her there felt disturbing.
Like seeing someone smile at a funeral.
Lucas stood immediately.
His face hardened.
“What are you doing here?”
Vanessa glanced around the room.
Her eyes briefly settled on Amelia.
Then on Sophia.
Then back to Lucas.
“I heard what happened.”
Lucas said nothing.
Vanessa slowly walked farther into the room.
Ignoring the tension.
Ignoring the pain.
Ignoring everything except herself.
The same way she always had.
“I came to see you.”
Lucas stared at her.
Disbelief mixing with anger.
“You came to a hospital on your wedding day?”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“I thought you deserved a goodbye.”
The statement landed heavily.
Lucas almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was absurd.
A goodbye?
After everything?
After the betrayal?
After abandoning him?
After choosing another man?
Now she wanted closure?
Now?
Amelia quietly watched from her bed.
Too weak to speak.
But strong enough to understand.
Strong enough to see the history hanging in the air between them.
Strong enough to recognize pain.
Vanessa took another step forward.
“You look terrible.”
Lucas clenched his jaw.
“Leave.”
The word came immediately.
Without hesitation.
Vanessa ignored it.
Instead she looked toward Amelia again.
For the first time her expression shifted.
Not sympathy.
Not compassion.
Something colder.
Something worse.
Pity.
The kind that feels like an insult.
Then she said the sentence that changed everything.
“You’re really choosing this?”
The room froze.
Lucas narrowed his eyes.
“What?”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You left your own wedding for this?”
Lucas couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
Vanessa continued.
“You let me stand at the altar while you’re sitting here beside—”
She glanced toward Amelia.
Then shrugged.
“A woman who’s already gone.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Even the machines seemed louder.
Lucas felt something inside him snap.
Not sadness.
Not heartbreak.
Something deeper.
Something darker.
Because this wasn’t jealousy.
This wasn’t regret.
This was cruelty.
Pure cruelty.
And Vanessa didn’t even seem aware of it.
She took another step.
Closer.
Then came the words neither Lucas nor Amelia would ever forget.
“You abandoned me for a corpse.”
The room exploded into silence.
A terrible silence.
Amelia closed her eyes.
Pain flashed across her face.
Not physical pain.
Emotional pain.
The pain of hearing someone reduce her entire existence to a burden.
To an inconvenience.
To something disposable.
Lucas turned pale.
Then red.
His hands trembled.
Not with grief.
With rage.
Years of hurt.
Years of betrayal.
Years of disappointment.
Everything rushed back at once.
Vanessa still didn’t understand.
She thought she was the victim.
She thought this moment was about her.
Even now.
Especially now.
Then a weak voice emerged from the hospital bed.
“Lucas…”
Amelia.
Barely audible.
Lucas immediately rushed back to her side.
His anger disappeared instantly.
Only concern remained.
“I’m here.”
Amelia struggled to breathe.
Each word seemed difficult.
Painful.
Precious.
Her eyes drifted toward the sleeping child across the room.
Sophia.
Their daughter.
Their entire world.
Tears filled Amelia’s eyes.
“Promise me.”
Lucas felt his heart breaking.
“No.”
“Promise me.”
“Don’t do this.”
Amelia smiled sadly.
A mother’s smile.
The kind that keeps giving love even while losing everything.
“Take care of our little girl.”
Lucas lowered his head.
Tears finally escaping.
“You’ll tell her yourself.”
Amelia slowly shook her head.
Both knew the truth.
And the truth was running out of time.
“She needs you.”
Lucas squeezed her hand.
Unable to speak.
Unable to breathe.
Unable to imagine a world without her.
Then Amelia whispered her final request.
“Protect her.”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Protect Sophia.”
Across the room, Vanessa suddenly shifted.
Almost impatient.
As though this intimate moment was delaying something important.
That movement caught Lucas’s attention.
And for the first time, he saw her clearly.
Not the woman he once loved.
Not the woman he once imagined marrying.
A stranger.
A complete stranger.
Someone capable of walking into a dying woman’s hospital room wearing a wedding dress and demanding attention.
Someone he no longer recognized.
Vanessa took another step forward.
Perhaps to speak.
Perhaps to defend herself.
Perhaps to make the moment about her once again.
She never got the chance.
Because Lucas turned.
And everything changed.
The grief disappeared from his eyes.
The heartbreak vanished.
What remained was something far more dangerous.
The fury of a husband.
The fury of a father.
The fury of a man who had finally lost too much.
His voice echoed through the room.
Cold.
Sharp.
Terrifying.
“Don’t.”
Vanessa froze.
Lucas pointed toward the door.
“Not one more step.”
The room felt smaller.
The air heavier.
Even the security staff outside glanced toward the doorway.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Vanessa stared at him.
Confused.
Almost frightened.
Because she had never seen this version of Lucas before.
Then he spoke again.
Slowly.
Clearly.
Every word carrying enough anger to shake the room.
“Take one more step toward my family…”
His voice dropped lower.
“…and you’ll regret walking into this hospital.”
For the first time since arriving, Vanessa felt fear.
Real fear.
Because she suddenly realized something.
The man standing before her was no longer the man she abandoned.
No longer the man who begged her to stay.
No longer the man who loved her.
And deep down…
May you like
She knew she had just made the biggest mistake of her life.
To Be Continued…
