PART 2: The coming-of-age story of a beggar boy

Margaret stared at Ethan.
"What do you mean you know where he is?"
Ethan took a slow breath.
Three weeks earlier, an ambulance had brought in a homeless man.
No identification.
No wallet.
No family.
No memory.
The man had been found unconscious beneath a highway bridge after a storm.
The hospital diagnosed severe amnesia caused by a head injury.
At the time, he was simply listed as John Doe.
But now, looking at the photograph in Margaret's trembling hands, Ethan couldn't ignore the resemblance.
The same eyes.
The same smile.
The same scar above the eyebrow.
Margaret's hands shook violently.
"Take me to him."
The next morning, Ethan wheeled Margaret into the rehabilitation wing.
Room 214.
Inside, a man sat quietly by the window.
Forty years old.
Weathered.
Thin.
Lost.
He turned when the door opened.
Margaret froze.
The wheelchair nearly slipped from her hands.
"Daniel..."
The man's eyes widened.
Something moved across his face.
Confusion.
Pain.
Recognition.
A tear rolled down his cheek.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then Margaret whispered the words she had repeated every night for twenty-one years.
"Come home, son."
The man grabbed his head.
Fragments of memories exploded inside his mind.
His bicycle.
His mother's laugh.
The diner.
A rainy night.
A truck.
Darkness.
Then everything came back.
Daniel fell to his knees.
"Mom..."
Margaret burst into tears.
And for the first time in twenty-one years, mother and son embraced.
Even the nurses were crying.
Ethan quietly stepped out of the room.
His promise was almost complete.
May you like
But he still didn't know how much bigger the story was about to become.
