"Step away from the line, sweetheart," Logan Hayes said, loud enough for the whole stadium to hear.

Evelyn Cross stopped with one hand on her battered rifle case, while laughter rolled across the Texas arena like thunder.

The case hung from her right hand, scratched silver at the corners, brown leather cracked along the handle.

Her black hoodie looked faded from years of washing.

Her sleeves were pushed slightly above her wrists.

On her left wrist, just below the glove, a small six-pointed star birthmark showed against her skin.

Nobody cared enough to notice it.

Not yet.

Logan stood three lanes away in a blue competition jersey covered with sponsor patches.

His name shone across the back in bold white letters.
