Chapter 10

I couldn’t sleep that night.

Every small sound outside made me tense. I kept thinking about what Detective Ruiz had told me — that Ethan had hired someone whose job was to “make problems disappear.” The idea that my own husband might want me dead was something I still couldn’t fully process.

The next morning, Ruiz came to see me again. This time, she looked even more serious than before.

“We’ve confirmed it,” she said. “Marcus Hale was paid by Ethan through a shell company. We don’t have enough evidence yet to arrest him, but we’re watching him. The problem is… he’s very good at what he does.”

I sat on the couch, holding a cup of coffee I hadn’t touched.

“What do I do now?” I asked. “I can’t keep running forever. And I can’t stay away from Noah.”

Ruiz nodded.

“I understand. That’s why I think we need to change our approach.”

She leaned forward.

“Instead of just defending yourself, we go on the offensive. We release some of the evidence we have to the media — carefully. The emails between Ethan and your mother, the threats, the fact that he hired someone like Marcus Hale. If this becomes public, Ethan will have a much harder time painting you as the unstable one.”

I thought about it for a moment.

If I stayed silent, Ethan would keep controlling the narrative. He would keep trying to take Noah away from me. And if he was truly willing to go as far as hiring someone dangerous… then staying quiet might get me killed.

“I’ll do it,” I said.

Ruiz looked relieved.

“Good. But we have to be smart about it. We’ll release the information through a trusted journalist. Someone who can verify everything first.”

That afternoon, I spoke with a journalist from a major local news outlet. I gave her copies of the emails, the threatening messages, and the information about Marcus Hale. She promised to verify everything before publishing.

For the first time in days, I felt like I was finally doing something instead of just reacting.

But that feeling didn’t last long.

That night, while I was lying in bed trying to sleep, my phone rang. It was an unknown number.

I almost didn’t answer, but something told me I should.

“Hello?” I said cautiously.

A man’s voice came through — calm, deep, and unsettlingly polite.

“Mrs. Hale,” he said. “Or should I say… Miss Bennett? I hear you’ve been talking to the police.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who is this?” I asked, even though I already had a terrible feeling I knew.

The man chuckled softly.

“My name is Marcus. I believe Detective Ruiz mentioned me.”

I sat up straight, my heart pounding.

“What do you want?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

“I want you to stop,” he said simply. “Stop talking to the police. Stop talking to journalists. Stop trying to fight. If you continue, things will become very unpleasant — not just for you, but for your son as well.”

My hands started shaking.

“Are you threatening my child?” I asked, my voice rising.

Marcus’s tone remained calm.

“I’m simply giving you advice. Ethan is willing to be reasonable. Sign the papers. Walk away. You can still have a life. But if you keep pushing… well, accidents happen. Especially to people who are already considered unstable.”

I felt sick.

Before I could respond, he continued.

“Oh, and one more thing,” he said. “I know where you are right now. That little apartment above the bookstore? Charming place. But not very secure.”

My blood turned to ice.

He knew where I was.

Marcus let out a small laugh.

“Sleep well, Claire. We’ll be in touch.”

Then he hung up.

I sat there in the dark, staring at my phone, my entire body shaking.

He knew my location.

Which meant Ethan knew too.

I immediately called Detective Ruiz and told her what happened. She promised to send officers to the apartment right away and arrange for me to be moved again.

But as I sat there waiting, one thought kept repeating in my mind:

This wasn’t just about custody anymore.

This had become a matter of survival.

May you like

And for the first time, I wasn’t sure if I would make it out of this alive.

To be continued...
