Chapter 5

I drove through the dark streets with no clear destination. My hands were gripping the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles turned white. Noah was still asleep in the back seat, unaware that his entire world had just been turned upside down.

My phone kept lighting up on the passenger seat. Ethan was calling non-stop. I didn’t answer. Then the messages started coming in, one after another.

Where the hell are you?
You’re not taking my son.
I’ve already called the police. They’re looking for you.

I felt a wave of panic rise in my chest. If Ethan reported me for kidnapping, the police might actually believe him — especially after everything that had happened with my family. I needed help. Fast.

I pulled over into an empty parking lot and called the only person I could think of.

Detective Ruiz answered on the third ring.

“Claire? It’s almost midnight. What’s wrong?”

My voice cracked as I spoke. “Ethan… he knew. He knew what Vanessa did. He was helping her hide money. When I found out, he threatened to take Noah away from me. I grabbed my son and left the house. I’m scared, Detective. I don’t know where to go.”

There was a short silence on the other end.

“Where are you right now?” Ruiz asked, her voice suddenly serious.

“I’m in my car. I don’t know where to go. Ethan said he already called the police.”

“Listen to me carefully,” Ruiz said. “Do not go back home. Do not go to any of your usual places. I’m going to send you an address. It’s a safe house we use for high-risk situations. Go there. I’ll meet you in an hour.”

I let out a shaky breath. “Okay.”

“Claire,” she added before hanging up, “be careful. If Ethan is as involved as you think, he might already be tracking your phone or your car.”

That thought terrified me.

I turned off my phone completely, then drove to the address Ruiz sent me. It was a small, nondescript house on the outskirts of the city. When I arrived, I parked in the back and carried Noah inside. The place was simple but clean. I locked every door and window, then sat on the couch with my son in my arms, too afraid to sleep.

An hour later, Detective Ruiz arrived with another officer. She looked tired but focused.

“Tell me everything,” she said.

I told her about the emails I found, Ethan’s threats, and how he admitted to helping Vanessa. Ruiz listened carefully, taking notes.

When I finished, she leaned back and sighed.

“This changes everything,” she said. “If Ethan was involved in helping Vanessa hide assets during her divorce, then he’s now part of an active fraud investigation. But more importantly…” She looked at me seriously. “If he’s willing to threaten you and try to take your child, we need to treat this as a domestic violence situation.”

She pulled out her phone.

“I’m going to request an emergency protective order first thing in the morning. Until then, you and Noah need to stay here. Do not contact Ethan. Do not go anywhere alone.”

I nodded, but my mind was still racing.

Just as Ruiz was about to leave, her phone rang. She stepped into the other room to answer it. When she came back, her expression had changed.

“What happened?” I asked.

Ruiz looked at me for a moment before speaking.

“Ethan filed an emergency custody petition two hours ago. He claimed you abducted Noah and that you’re mentally unstable. The judge has scheduled a hearing for tomorrow morning.”

My heart dropped.

“Tomorrow?” I whispered.

Ruiz nodded. “And there’s something else. Ethan told the court that you have a history of making false accusations against your family. He’s using your sister’s case against you.”

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

Ruiz placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Claire, listen to me. We still have time. But you need to be prepared. This is no longer just about what happened with your sister. Ethan is playing dirty, and he has resources.”

She paused, then added something that made my blood run cold.

“There’s one more thing. We found something in Ethan’s emails. He wasn’t just helping Vanessa hide money.”

I looked up at her.

“What do you mean?”

Ruiz met my eyes.

“He was also in contact with someone else. Someone who was helping him build a case against you long before any of this happened.”

My voice came out barely above a whisper.

“Who?”

Ruiz hesitated for a second, then said:

May you like

“Your mother.”
