Chapter 3: The Bracelet From the Past

I slowly turned toward the woman in the wedding dress.

She backed away, sobbing uncontrollably.

"You have to believe me..."

"I was only trying to protect our reputation."

"You locked a terrified child inside a room..." I said through clenched teeth.

"...to protect your reputation?"

I stepped toward her, ready to rip the key from her hand.

Then something caught my eye.

The little boy clung tightly to the maid.

Around his wrist...

A faded braided bracelet.

Hanging from it...

A tiny silver cross.

My heart stopped.

The room seemed to lose all its air.

I knew that cross.

Years ago, my fiancée had tearfully told me she'd lost it during a violent storm.
