CHAPTER 1: THE MAN NOBODY RECOGNIZED

The jewelry store was silent except for the soft hum of the air conditioning.

Rows of luxury watches sparkled beneath cool white display lights. Marble floors reflected every movement like mirrors.

Near the center display stood a man in a tailored black suit.

His name was Marcus Bennett.

At first glance, he looked like any successful customer browsing expensive watches.

No security detail.

No entourage.

No flashy jewelry.

Just a silver wristwatch and a calm expression.

Marcus slowly examined a display case containing several limited-edition timepieces.

The employees barely noticed him.

Most assumed he was simply another customer.

Then the front doors opened.

A police officer stepped inside.

Officer Reed had been responding to a report from a nearby business about a suspicious individual seen walking between luxury stores.

When he entered the jewelry shop, his eyes immediately landed on Marcus.

Something about the man didn't fit the image Reed expected to see inside a store where some watches cost more than most cars.

Without asking questions, he made a decision.

A bad one.

He marched across the marble floor.

Customers turned their heads.

Employees paused their work.

The officer stopped beside Marcus.

"Hey, get the hell out of here."

The entire store went quiet.

Marcus didn't move.

For several seconds he simply stared at the watch display.

Then he slowly turned his head.

"Excuse me?"

The calmness in his voice somehow irritated the officer even more.

Officer Reed pointed toward the front door.

His tone hardened.

"Get out now, sir."

Several customers exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Nobody understood what was happening.

Marcus looked at the officer.

Then at the watches.

Then back at the officer.

Still calm.

May you like

Still composed.

And somehow, that calmness made the situation even more tense.
