CHAPTER 4: THE BOARDROOM PANIC

By 6:00 AM the next morning, the Langley corporate headquarters was a war zone. No one was drinking coffee. No one was making small talk in the glass elevators. Victor stepped off onto the executive floor to the sound of shouting.

“How did a minority stakeholder authorize a freeze on the offshore accounts?!” a senior VP was screaming at a terrified risk analyst. “Sir, the stake isn't just minority oversight,” the analyst stammered, pointing at a red-flashing monitor. “It’s a preferred equity position with a poison pill clause. If we try to liquidate, she automatically absorbs the voting rights!”

Victor walked into the boardroom. His father, Richard Langley, sat at the head of the table. He looked ten years older than he had yesterday. The silver hair that usually commanded respect now just looked tired.

“Dad,” Victor said, closing the heavy glass doors behind him, shutting out the chaos of the trading floor. Richard didn't look up from his tablet. “She initiated a proxy battle at 4:00 AM,” Richard said, his voice flat. “She bypassed our legal team entirely. She went straight to the institutional investors.” “With what leverage?” Victor asked, stepping closer. Richard finally looked up. His eyes were hollow. “With the truth, Victor. With the original ledgers from the Carlisle frame-up.”

Victor felt his stomach drop. “So it was true. You framed her father.” “Arthur Carlisle was going to blow the whistle on the pension fund diversion,” Richard said coldly, the pragmatism of a ruthless billionaire returning for a brief second. “I did what I had to do to protect this company. To protect you.” “You destroyed a family!” Victor yelled, slamming his hand on the mahogany table. “I neutralized a threat!” Richard fired back. “And I paid for the girl’s silence. I funded her relocation. I gave her the seed money for her new life!” Victor stared at his father in absolute horror. “You gave her the weapon,” Victor whispered. “And she spent the last six years sharpening it.”
