CHAPTER 8: THE ULTIMATUM

The meeting did not take place in a neutral corporate office. Elena dictated the location. It was the same courthouse building where her father had been convicted six years ago.

Victor and Richard walked into the empty, echoey corridor. Elena was waiting for them, sitting at a long wooden table. She wore a sharp, tailored black suit. She looked like an executioner holding court.

Richard tried to take control of the room immediately. “Elena,” he said, using his most patronizing, authoritative voice. “You’ve made your point. You’ve caused a significant disruption. But if you think you can destroy an institution like Langley Corp, you are deeply mistaken. Let’s discuss a buyout of your 18.4% stake.”

Elena didn't look at Richard. She looked at Victor. “Did he really think I brought him here to sell my shares?” she asked softly. Victor couldn't meet her eyes. “He’s delusional.”

Elena turned her gaze to Richard. The temperature in the room plummeted. “I am not here to sell, Richard,” she said, her voice like cracking ice. “I am here to accept your unconditional surrender.” She slid a single piece of paper across the table. “This is a full confession to the framing of Arthur Carlisle, the embezzlement of the pension funds, and the subsequent cover-up. You will sign it, and you will hand it directly to the federal prosecutors waiting in the lobby.”

Richard laughed, a harsh, desperate sound. “I will never sign that.” “If you don't,” Elena replied smoothly, “I trigger the poison pill in my equity contract. Langley Corp goes into immediate, hostile liquidation. The pension funds of your ten thousand employees are wiped out. The collateral damage will be catastrophic, and you will spend the rest of your life buried under civil litigation before you inevitably go to federal prison anyway.”

She leaned forward. “Sign the paper, Richard. Go to prison for what you did to my father. Do it, and I will spare the employees' pensions. I will allow the company to be acquired and restructured.” “You’re a monster,” Richard spat. “No,” Elena said. “I’m a reflection.”
