Chapter 21
Mia caused the next problem.
At fourteen, she recorded a senior relative telling a staff member:
“Children do not give orders in a Bellandi house.”
The staff member had refused to let him enter a restricted family wing without authorization.
The relative was seventy.
Mia was passing through the hall.
She stopped.
“Neither do random uncles.”
He looked at her.
“I am not random.”
“You’re not on the access list.”
“You think a list outranks blood?”
“Yes.”
She filmed the rest.
The video reached Serafina before dinner.
The relative was Renato.
Again.
Serafina watched it twice.
No threats.
No physical contact.
But the language mattered.
Renato had spent years testing the limits of the reforms.
Never enough for a dramatic confrontation.
Always enough to reveal what he still believed.
Serafina called him in.
Mia asked to attend.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m addressing his access privileges.”
“I was there.”
“You can provide your recording.”
“You always say people affected should be heard.”
Serafina stopped.
Mia had learned governance too well.
She attended with Dana present.
Renato opened:
“This is absurd.”
Mia replied:
“Good start.”
Serafina gave her a look.
Mia sat back.
Renato defended himself.
He had entered the family wing for forty years.
The staff member had worked there for six months.
He believed common sense should override technical procedure.
Mia asked:
“If Mom made the rule, why is your common sense above it?”
“Because your mother is my niece.”
“That makes less sense.”
Renato became angry.
“Children should not interrogate elders.”
Mia looked at Serafina.
“Can I answer that?”
“Yes.”
“Why not?”
Renato had no useful answer.
His access privileges were restricted permanently to public family spaces unless specifically invited.
No removal from legitimate business holdings.
No exile.
No spectacle.
He called it humiliation.
Serafina called it consequence.
Afterward Mia asked:
“Why do you keep letting him stay around?”
“Because disagreeing with the reforms is not grounds for removing his lawful interests.”
“He keeps crossing lines.”
“And each line has a consequence.”
“What if he never changes?”
“Then the controls keep working.”
Mia frowned.
“That sounds exhausting.”
“It is.”
“Wouldn’t it be easier to ban him?”
“Yes.”
“Then why not?”
“Because power is dangerous when convenience becomes enough reason to remove someone.”
Mia absorbed that reluctantly.
Later Leo asked:
“You really recorded him?”
“Yes.”
“Mom used to hide cameras.”
“This wasn’t hidden.”
“Still creepy.”
“He was being annoying.”
“That is not a legal doctrine.”
Mia rolled her eyes.
The siblings argued for twenty minutes.
Serafina listened from the next room.
