Chapter 1

Dante ended the barbecue.

There was no announcement.

He simply looked toward his head of security and said, “Clear the property.”

Within minutes, the music stopped. Plates were abandoned. Family guests were quietly directed toward the front drive while capos were moved into the west sitting room and told to remain available.

Javier stood near the patio with two bodyguards beside him.

Clara refused to leave his side.

Dante did not speak to either of them.

His attention was on Leo.

The boy had grass stains across his shirt and a red mark along one cheek where his face had been pressed into the lawn.

Mia had scraped one elbow.

Neither injury was serious.

That did not make Dante feel better.

He crouched in front of Leo.

“Did Javier hurt you anywhere else?”

Leo shook his head.

“Your back?”

“No.”

“Can you breathe normally?”

“Yes.”

Dante looked toward Mia.

“You?”

“My elbow.”

“We’ll clean it.”

She nodded.

Then Dante saw Leo’s hand move toward his back pocket again.

“The envelope.”

Leo froze.

Clara did too.

Dante noticed.

“What is it?”

Leo slowly pulled out a wrinkled cream envelope.

“I found it.”

“Where?”

“Behind the pool house.”

Javier stepped forward.

“That belongs to me.”

Every bodyguard near him shifted.

Dante did not look away from Leo.

“Where behind the pool house?”

“Mia kicked the soccer ball behind the hedge. I went to get it.”

Mia nodded quickly.

“There were papers.”

Leo continued.

“Javier and Clara were arguing.”

Clara’s face tightened.

“They weren’t there when I walked over. I just heard them.”

“What were they saying?”

“I don’t know.”

Leo looked uncomfortable.

“I wasn’t trying to listen.”

“I know.”

“One of them said something about the lake house.”

Dante’s attention sharpened.

The Romano lake house was not simply a vacation property.

It had belonged to Dante’s late wife, Caroline.

Before her death, she transferred the property into a protected family structure intended eventually for Leo and Mia.

Dante managed it for them.

Nobody else had authority over it.

“Then what happened?”

“I found this under the hedge.”

Leo handed him the envelope.

Dante opened it.

Inside was a photocopied notice from a commercial lender.

He read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

His expression did not change.

That frightened Clara more than anger would have.

The notice referenced an outstanding loan secured against the lake property.

Principal balance: $4.6 million.

Dante looked at the date.

The loan had supposedly been authorized eleven months earlier.

By him.

He had never seen it.

He turned toward Javier.

“You borrowed against my children’s property?”

Javier immediately said, “It isn’t what you think.”

Dante almost laughed.

“Everybody says that right before telling me something worse.”

Clara stepped forward.

“This should be handled privately.”

Dante finally looked at her.

“My son was face-down in the grass because he found this.”

“I had nothing to do with Javier touching Leo.”

Javier turned toward her.

“Careful.”

It was one word.

But Dante heard the warning inside it.

Clara heard it too.

So did Leo.

The boy moved closer to his father.

Dante folded the notice.

“What did Javier want from you?”

Leo swallowed.

“The envelope.”

“Did he ask?”

“He told me to give it back.”

“And when you didn’t?”

Leo looked at the grass.

“He grabbed me.”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

Javier interrupted.

“He thought it was some game.”

Leo looked up immediately.

“No, I didn’t.”

Dante raised one hand.

Javier stopped speaking.

Dante placed the envelope inside his jacket.

Then he looked toward his cousin.

“You are not leaving the estate until I understand this.”

Javier stared at him.

“You’re holding me prisoner?”

“No.”

Dante’s voice remained calm.

“You can leave whenever you want.”

He glanced toward the driveway.

“But every company card, family credential, security access, and corporate authorization connected to your name gets shut off the moment you do.”

That landed harder than a threat.

Javier stayed.

Dante turned toward Clara.

“You too.”

Her face hardened.

“I’m not your employee.”

“No.”

Dante looked at the engagement ring on her hand.

“You’re the woman I was planning to marry.”

May you like

He paused.

“That distinction may matter a lot by morning.”
