Dante ordered a complete review of every payment made on the loan.
For ten months, Javier’s project paid normally.
Then contractors filed claims.
Construction slowed.
A zoning dispute delayed sales.
The project became unstable.
Javier kept making payments from reserves until the reserves ran out.
Clara knew.
She had been receiving copies of lender correspondence.
That was why she and Javier had been arguing behind the pool house.
She wanted him to sell assets and cure the default before Dante learned anything.
Javier wanted her to contribute money toward the cure.
She refused.
“Why?” Dante asked when Claire reconstructed the dispute.
“Because she says the original debt was his once he took the proceeds.”
Dante stared at her.
“That is convenient.”
“Yes.”
Clara’s attorney proposed a formal interview.
Dante agreed.
Clara arrived without her engagement ring.
She placed it on the table before anyone began.
“I don’t expect you to marry me.”
Dante looked at the ring.
“This meeting isn’t about that.”
“It is for me.”
“Then you’re still misunderstanding the scale of the problem.”
Clara flinched.
She admitted hiding the CVC guarantees.
She admitted requesting the appraisal.
She admitted accessing Dante’s estate documents.
She admitted beginning the loan application.
But she insisted she had never intended to endanger the lake house permanently.
“I thought I could borrow short-term, settle the guarantees, then refinance everything into my own name.”
“You forged my authorization.”
“Yes.”
“You used property that belongs to Leo and Mia.”
“Yes.”
“You planned to repay it before I noticed.”
“Yes.”
Dante leaned back.
“That is not a defense.”
“I know.”
For the first time, she sounded as though she did.
Then he asked about Javier.
“He found out.”
“Yes.”
“And blackmailed you.”
Clara hesitated.
“Not exactly.”
Dante’s eyes narrowed.
“What does exactly look like?”
“He told me he would keep quiet if the money went into his project.”
“That is blackmail.”
“At first.”
Again.
At first.
“What happened later?”
Clara looked toward her attorney.
Morgan nodded.
“He started changing documents.”
Dante went still.
“What documents?”
“Payment certifications. Project reports. Lender updates.”
“Why?”
“To make the development look healthier than it was.”
“And you helped?”
Clara looked down.
“Yes.”
Clue number three.
The original fraud had evolved.
The lake loan was no longer the only deception.
