Chapter 14

The family changed because Dante forced it to.

Not emotionally.

Structurally.

That mattered more.

No family member automatically received executive authority in Romano Holdings.

Independent directors gained real voting power.

Sensitive transactions required dual approval.

Real-estate collateral involving trusts required outside fiduciary review.

Family-company emails and household files were separated.

No business packets were delivered to Dante’s residence.

Several older relatives called the reforms humiliating.

Dante agreed.

They were.

The family had earned some humiliation.

Javier’s criminal and civil matters moved forward.

His cooperation reduced his exposure but did not eliminate it.

He repaid gains connected to the waterfront development.

The project was eventually sold at a loss to an unrelated developer.

His personal wealth shrank dramatically.

So did his status.

Clara accepted responsibility for the original fraudulent loan application and related document misuse.

Her remaining assets were applied toward restitution and creditors.

The engagement was finished permanently.

There would be no reconciliation arc between her and Dante.

Some relationships ended because trust had been damaged.

Others ended because the method of damage revealed incompatible values.

Dante knew which one this was.

The lake property survived.

The first weekend the children returned, Leo stood on the dock staring at the water.

“Is it still ours?”

Dante sat beside him.

“It’s yours and Mia’s through the trust.”

“Can you sell it?”

“Not by myself.”

“Can Javier?”

“No.”

“Clara?”

“No.”

Leo thought about that.

“Good.”

Dante smiled faintly.

“Very.”

Mia ran down the dock wearing a life jacket before anyone had told her to put one on.

She jumped beside them.

“Can I drive the boat?”

“No.”

“When I’m eight?”

“No.”

“Ten?”

Leo laughed.

Dante looked at both children.

There were still bodyguards on the property.

Still family complications.

Still a name that carried history.

May you like

But the lake house was finally what Caroline intended.

A place the children could inherit without inheriting the leverage adults once attached to it.
