Chapter 13

Clara asked for one meeting with Dante before finalizing her plea and financial agreements.

Claire attended.

So did Clara’s attorney.

There would be no private emotional ambush.

Clara looked thinner.

Less polished.

Still herself.

“I need you to understand why I didn’t tell you about the debt.”

Dante leaned back.

“I understand fear.”

“No. You understand power.”

The statement irritated him.

He let her continue.

“When we started discussing the prenup, everything was yours. The house. The companies. The security. The staff. Your name.”

“You had your own career.”

“A failing one.”

“You lied about that.”

“Yes.”

She looked down.

“I thought if you knew how bad it was, you would see me as another woman trying to marry into money.”

“Would I?”

“I didn’t know.”

Neither did he.

That uncertainty was the point.

Clara had been afraid of an answer she refused to ask for.

Then she saw the estate-plan draft and interpreted it as confirmation that Dante never intended to trust her.

“So you borrowed against Leo and Mia’s property.”

“I told myself it was temporary.”

“You forged my authorization.”

“Yes.”

“You let Javier use the loan.”

“I was already trapped.”

“You helped him alter reports.”

“Yes.”

Dante looked at her.

“And when the lender started sending notices, you hid them.”

“Yes.”

She began crying.

“I kept waiting for one clean way out.”

Dante’s voice remained quiet.

“There isn’t one after the first lie gets expensive.”

Clara looked at him.

He believed her fear.

He believed her shame.

He even believed she had loved him.

None of that changed what she did.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“You should have told me before the engagement.”

“I know.”

“You should have told me after Javier found out.”

“I know.”

“You should have told me before Leo ended up under Javier’s knee.”

She closed her eyes.

That was the line she could not answer.

Dante did not need another confession.

The meeting ended.

He felt no triumph walking away.

Only clarity.

Clara had a motive.

May you like

Javier had a motive.

Neither motive was an excuse.
