The photograph appeared online three months later.
Leo leaving Dr. Price’s office beside Javier.
It had been taken during their second meeting.
A second meeting Dante had not told extended family about.
The headline read:
ROMANO HEIR REUNITES WITH DISGRACED COUSIN AS FAMILY PREPARES JAVIER’S RETURN.
Leo saw it during school.
By the time Dante reached him, his son was furious.
“I didn’t reunite with anybody.”
“I know.”
“Who took it?”
“We’re finding out.”
“That’s what adults say when they don’t know.”
“Yes.”
Leo looked at the photograph again.
He had asked for the second meeting because Javier mentioned a contractor who might help explain part of the old waterfront failure.
They talked about accountability.
Work.
What losing status had done to Javier’s friendships.
Nothing resembling restoration.
Now strangers were turning the meeting into a family announcement.
Marco issued a statement before Dante could stop him.
The Romano family believes in accountability, rehabilitation, and the eventual restoration of those who accept responsibility.
Dante called him.
“You will retract that.”
“It doesn’t name Leo.”
“The article does.”
“I didn’t write the article.”
“You gave it meaning.”
Marco’s voice hardened.
“You cannot freeze Javier forever because your son was frightened once.”
Dante became very still.
“Once?”
“You know what I mean.”
“Yes.”
That ended the call.
Claire traced the photograph.
It came from a private investigator hired by Marco’s son, Enzo.
Enzo claimed the investigator was monitoring Javier because some relatives worried he might embarrass the family again.
The metadata told a different story.
The investigator had been instructed:
Capture contact between J.R. and L.R. Evidence of family normalization preferred.
Normalization.
A child’s private decision converted into corporate evidence.
Dante convened the Romano Holdings governance committee.
Marco no longer controlled appointments.
Independent directors did.
Enzo held one legitimate executive role in logistics.
He expected a private family reprimand.
Instead the committee reviewed misuse of company resources, privacy violations, and undisclosed payments.
Enzo was suspended.
The investigation became part of formal company records.
Marco arrived at Dante’s office furious.
“You are humiliating your cousin publicly.”
“No.”
“You could handle this in ten minutes.”
“That’s how we got here.”
“He took a picture.”
“He used company money to surveil my son.”
“Leo is fifteen, not five.”
“That makes his privacy less important?”
Marco slammed one hand onto the desk.
“You’re letting therapists and independent directors replace family judgment.”
Dante looked at him.
“Good.”
Marco froze.
Dante continued.
“Family judgment created the forged loan. Family judgment altered reports. Family judgment told a ten-year-old to give back evidence. Family judgment once taught me that protecting the name mattered more than exposing the truth.”
“You’re ashamed of us.”
“I’m ashamed of what we called loyalty.”
Marco left.
The next afternoon Javier released his own statement.
Not through Romano Holdings.
Through his attorney.
My meetings with Leo are private and occur only because he chose them. They do not represent reconciliation with the Romano organization or my return to family authority. I have not requested and will not accept a position created from those meetings.
Leo read it.
“He didn’t ask me before releasing that.”
Dante felt the problem immediately.
The statement protected Leo.
It also discussed him.
Javier realized the same thing before anyone called.
He sent a message through Dr. Price.
I should have asked whether Leo wanted any public response. I repeated the mistake of deciding what would protect the situation without asking the person affected.
Leo stared at it.
Then said:
“At least he’s getting faster.”
