Dante wanted to believe the case was becoming simple.
Clara planned the loan.
Javier took the money.
Both hid it.
Simple stories were dangerous because people stopped asking questions once they felt satisfying.
Claire refused to let him.
“Why would Clara create a multimillion-dollar loan that benefited Javier?”
“To buy his help.”
“For what?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then we don’t have the story.”
The accountant found the first reason to doubt the obvious answer.
Javier’s waterfront project had not requested emergency funding until six weeks after the loan application on the lake property began.
The application came first.
The need it supposedly solved came later.
Dante looked at the timeline.
“So the loan wasn’t created for Javier’s project.”
“Not originally.”
“Then what was it created for?”
They traced an early draft of the closing statement.
Before final funding, the loan proceeds had been scheduled differently.
$1.7 million to a private lender.
$1.1 million to an entity called CVC Hospitality.
The remainder to reserves and fees.
Then, five days before closing, payment instructions changed.
Almost all proceeds were redirected to Romano Development Partners.
Claire searched CVC Hospitality.
Clara Vaughn had founded it four years earlier.
Dante knew the company.
It had developed boutique hotels.
Clara told him she sold her interest before they became engaged.
That was true.
Mostly.
She had sold the equity.
She had not been released from two personal guarantees.
The failed projects still exposed her to approximately $2.3 million.
Dante stared at the documents.
“She hid this during the prenup.”
“Yes.”
“Would I have married her?”
Claire looked at him.
“That is not a legal question.”
“No.”
He looked toward the window.
“I don’t know.”
That uncertainty explained more than certainty would have.
Clara may have believed disclosure would end the engagement.
Maybe the lake loan began as an attempt to rescue herself.
But how did Javier enter?
Thomas found a calendar entry on Clara’s phone from eleven months earlier.
Only one word.
Javier.
The date was the day after the lender sent the preliminary approval.
Clue number two.
Javier did not appear at the beginning.
He appeared after Clara had already secured a potential loan.
Dante sat back.
The sequence mattered.
Clara had a hidden debt.
She appraised the children’s property.

She applied for financing.
