Why He Never Came Back / Chapter 1 / 4

PART 1: The Storm Brought Him Home

The storm had turned the diner windows into trembling walls of water.

Outside, rain hammered the glass so hard the neon OPEN sign looked like it was drowning in red light.

Inside, everything was small and warm.

Chrome edges.

Wood booths.

Yellow lamps.

A bowl of soup steamed in front of an old man wrapped in a beige blanket.

A young waitress named Emma gently lifted another spoonful toward him.

"Just one more bite."

The old man swallowed slowly.

His hands shook.

His breathing was shallow.

His eyes carried the quiet exhaustion of someone who had spent years waiting for a miracle he no longer admitted he still believed in.

Then the diner door swung open.

Cold blue storm light poured inside.

A man in a soaked black suit stepped through the entrance.

Water dripped from his sleeves onto the tile floor.

The instant he saw the old man...

He froze.

Not from surprise.

From recognition.

Emma looked toward him.

"We're closing."

He never answered.

His eyes never left the wheelchair.

Then he noticed the faded gold wedding ring beneath the blanket.

His face collapsed.

He whispered one word.

"Dad..."

The spoon stopped halfway.

The old man slowly lifted his head.

"My... boy?"

For one impossible moment...

The years between them disappeared.

Until Emma noticed the newspaper clipping sticking from the stranger's coat.

Across the front page...

His photograph.

Beneath it...

May you like

One word.

WANTED.
