Why He Never Came Back / Chapter 2 / 4

PART 2: The Son Who Came Back to Say Goodbye

Emma quietly picked up the newspaper.

The same face.

The same man kneeling beside the wheelchair.

Wanted.

The son saw her reading it.

He didn't run.

Didn't argue.

Didn't hide.

Instead, he lowered his head.

"I know."

The old man looked between them in confusion.

"What happened to you?"

The answer came slowly.

Years earlier, he had taken the blame for a robbery organized by dangerous men.

If he talked...

His father would die.

So he disappeared.

Changed his name.

Worked wherever no one asked questions.

Every birthday...

Every Christmas...

Every Father's Day...

He wanted to come home.

But every road back led danger to the diner where his father still lived.

So he stayed away.

Until a newspaper article reached him hundreds of miles away.

It showed a photograph of the old man eating alone in a roadside diner.

The headline said he was dying.

That was enough.

He no longer cared what happened to himself.

He only wanted one last chance to say goodbye.

From inside his coat, he removed an envelope.

Inside were savings from years of hard labor.

A bus ticket.

The deed to the diner.

And a handwritten confession prepared for the police.

Emma finally understood.

He hadn't returned to escape justice.

May you like

He had returned after putting everything in order.

TO BE CONTINUED...!
